Title: MegaUpload Kaput??
Post by: motcher76 on Fri 20 Jan 2012 11:56:42
Looks like MegaUpload is copping the same s$%t as RapidShare did ... although RS at least didn't suffer anything as drastic as a complete take-down of the site - just a few indictments/lawsuits.

... MegaUpload file sharing site shut down for piracy by FBI.

The Department of Justice announced Thursday that it has conducted a major action to shut down MegaUpload, a popular file-sharing site widely used for free downloads of movies and television shows ...

Plenty of Net chatter and news items detailing the action if you want to read more.

The MU owner/CEO (New Zealand based) and a couple of directors (U.S. based?) have been arrested, the MU site is currently "offline" (dead), and you'll find MU file links no longer work (also dead). Bummer :P >:( >:(

I thought MU was based in Hong Kong ... how on earth does the FBI manage to pull a foreign site down, and have foreign nationals arrested??

This the end for MU??

once again the might of the USA doing what they do best.  Screwing the rest of the world without regard for borders and laws of other countries.  Even Obama disagrees with the anti piracy laws but still the movie and record companies push on.  Soon we will not be able to even log onto the web without a signed permission slip form the thought police..... 1984 alive and well in 2012

What's the next best upload site then? Most of the links on this site would be all gone i'd say. All that work for nought.

'' ... Following the shutdown of the Megaupload website, hackers have retaliated by taking down the FBI and US Department of Justice sites. Hackers from the Anonymous group tweeted that they had shut the websites of the FBI, Justice Department, Universal Music, and the Recording Industry Association of America ... ''

Interesting days ahead :)

Didn't know MegaUpload was run out of NZ?!  Have a look at Neowin site for info.

Ah, this is really the world trying to catch up to the digital age and how do they do it, sue, shutdown.

I'm sure Rupert Murdoch is behind it somewhere ;)

Hopefully someone will get it back up and running in some way shape or form shortly so all those links don't disappear into the ether.

There is an ip address being posted around on some forums. Hard to tell whether it is legit or not.

When you think about it though what about all those people who have uploaded photos, documents, home movies etc.  The FBI won't be able to stop them from accessing them.

There should be some news in the next couple of days

Mirroring has definite advantages, but that's assuming there are providers left to do so ... a lot seem to be ducking for cover already post the MegaUpload fallout. FileServe and FileSonic are the latest to disable file-sharing (other than download and retrieve files that you have uploaded personally) and a few other file-hosts have severely "curtailed services". Perhaps it's only a matter of time before the rest cave in or do a runner?

 :( :(

MPAA Targets Fileserve, MediaFire, Wupload, Putlocker and Depositfiles

It is no secret that the MPAA was a main facilitators of the criminal investigation against MegaUpload. But while the movie studios have praised the actions of the US Government, they are not satisfied yet. Paramount Pictures' vice president for worldwide content protection identified FileServe, MediaFire, Wupload, Putlocker and DepositFiles as prime targets that should be shuttered next.

The file-hosting business has been in a permanent state of chaos since the MegaUpload shutdown in January. Many sites were quick to remove their affiliate programs and some went as far as blocking visitors from the US entirely.

It's clear that site owners are concerned that their business might become a target, and if it’s up to the major movie studios this fear is justified. ''We continue to make criminal referrals,'' Paramount Pictures' Alfred Perry said during the On Copyright conference in New York yesterday.

CNET reports that the Paramount Pictures produced a list of five ''rogue'' file-hosters, presented in a fancy graphic where Megaupload is crossed out. The prime targets on this shutdown list are Fileserve, MediaFire, Wupload, Putlocker and Depositfiles.

The movie studio claims that these ''rogue'' cyberlockers receive 41 billion page views a year, which translates to five views for every person on the planet.

Whether the Department of Justice will act on new referrals from the movie studios has yet to be seen. For now they have their hands full with MegaUpload.

MediaFire and Audible Magic Announce Copyrighted Content Recognition Partnership

Published 11:05 a.m., Tuesday, July 17, 2012

MediaFire, a premier provider of cloud storage services, announced today that they have partnered with Audible Magic, the industry's leading provider of content recognition and identification solutions. Under the agreement, Audible Magic will provide copyright recognition services to MediaFire for audio and video files shared through MediaFire's service.

The addition of Audible Magic's content recognition services will allow MediaFire to proactively manage user’s compliance with MediaFire’s Terms of Service by identifying copyrighted audio and video files to prevent unauthorized sharing.

Another music blog I regularly visit just had his MediaFire account suspended today. What a pisser  :P

A very interesting (and entertaining) perspective; thanks for the clip innocent bystander.

The $8billion iPod

As the adage goes ... there are lies, damned lies, and statistics ... and MPAA knows how to use them.

What's going on with RapidShare? Last few weeks I've been getting superfast download speeds as a free user ... today I even got up to 1mb/sec!! Have they finally taken pity on us poor freeloaders and lifted the throttle or are they just trying to win back support/clients?

Cheers

Hi Motcher I think It may have something to do with the fact that there are a few others out there that are offering a fairly painless quick and easy to use free service Zippyshare Sendmyway and mediafire to name a few.

Yes, I think you're right Deutros. Sure won't tempt me back for a paid account with them, but I'm happy in the meantime to take advantage of their un-throttled downloads for free-users to grab a lot of FLAC archives I didn't bother with before ... knowing they'd take forever to download; assuming the download didn't crash half-way through with the constant stop/starts that RS was imposing on free-users.

Knowing RS the un-throttled downloads for freebies won't last long.

Cheers
