Greetings

Hi
I'm an ageing hippy who pretended to be a business management consultant for the last few years, recently I chucked that to go gardening ... much better work, wish I'd realised this sooner.

After nearly twenty years in storage I have unpacked the old vinyl and am now enjoying the music of my youth.

It holds up extremely well I was particularly surprised by the production. Just listened to BlackFeather Mountains of Madness and the Peter Dawkins The Star Suite, a kiwi who produced Spectrum and many Aussie bands in the early 70's  and now am listening to Milesago. Takes me back to the Station Hotel and TFMuch Ballroom... for a while in 75-76 I ran the rock lounge out the back of the Kingston Hotel in Richmond on Thursday, friday and Saturday nights. (Checked their website - looks like its moved up market - last time I visited it was a Friends of Dorothy establishment)  I got to book acts like Paul Kelly and the Dots and Jo Jo Zep; it was the hardest I ever worked; and I think it was also the hardest I ever partied ...I love music's ability to take us back to these experiences.

I have very broad musical interests but finding most recently its increasingly difficult to keep up with my teenagers

Welcome to Ausrock Sophist, and thanks for the great intro. Plenty of others here, myself included, stuck in the seventies. Join in the forums where you can, and make yourself at home here.

May also be a good time to thing about bringing your vinyl into the digital age. You'll find plenty of help here if you want to go down that track too.

Thanks Beergut
I've got a line from the amp into the PC and have recorded a few LPs that seem a bit worse for wear. I've been experimenting with Audacity to get recording levels etc right ...could use some advice on software tools which I see is a discussion topic will check out past posts over the next few days.

There's been a fair bit of discussion on the forums in the past on tools to rip Vinyl and cassette to digital. Problem is you'll have to wade through a fair bit of the site to find them because they're fairly old by now. This thread is a good start, but from memory there are others with a lot more posts and better advice.

I still use Goldwave, mainly because I've gotten used to it and know how to tweak it, but it sometimes doesn't do all that I'd like. It is very similar to Audacity. Others that come to mind are "Acoustica Spin it Again" and Izotope RX. I've had a play with Izotope but for the moment the learning curve is too great for me, so sticking with Goldwave for now.

Feel free to resurrect any of the old threads and ask questions. We've had hundreds of newer members join since those earlier threads who would be only too happy to pass on their experiences.
